AUSTrale has the highest number of drug-related deaths and overdoses in the world, with an estimated 1,800 deaths and 3,100 overdoses in 2016.
In the capital, Australia, the number of deaths has soared to more than 3,500, according to figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The number of overdoses has doubled since 2015, from 873 to 2,066.
The number of people killed by drug-addicted drug users has nearly tripled, from a low of more than 200 in 2014 to 1,700 in 2016, according the report, released on Wednesday.
The report also found that in 2016 the number fell to less than 1 per cent of all drug-affected deaths. AAP/ABC
